The Story of Wooden Waste

Natural Resources

The main source of wooden products is trees. This natural material obtained from forests is a renewable resource when used sustainably.

Raw materials

Wooden materials are generally produced from wood and other plant fibers. These raw materials can be used in many sectors thanks to their durable and workable structures.

Industry

The forest products industry is a sector that processes wood raw materials or products obtained from forests with mechanical or chemical methods and offers them as raw materials for other industries. In this process, finished or semi-finished products are produced. Turkey is in a strong position compared to many countries in terms of forest assets. Our country's forested areas cover 26% of the total surface area and reach approximately 20.7 million hectares. This rate is higher than the 24% average in the European Union countries and shows Turkey's potential in this area.

Product

Wooden products are used in different areas such as furniture, pallets, packaging, construction materials and decoration. It is preferred for both functional and decorative purposes with its durability and aesthetic appearance.

Waste

Wooden products that have completed their useful life are considered wood waste. These wastes usually consist of furniture pieces, packaging materials, construction residues and old wooden items. Products such as chipboard, MDF, and board can be given as examples of scrap wood.

Harms to the Environment and Human Health

Uncontrolled release of wood waste into nature creates environmental pollution and leads to waste of natural resources. In addition, chemically treated wood can cause soil and water pollution.

Methods to be Applied

It is important to separate wood waste according to their types during collection. While chemically treated wood is evaluated separately, untreated natural wood can be used in compost or biomulch production.

Delivery Locations

Wooden waste must be delivered to licensed recycling facilities or wood processing facilities for recycling. In these facilities, waste is recovered with appropriate methods.

Recovery

Wood waste can be processed in the recycling process and used in energy production or as raw materials for new products. In this way, it contributes to the protection of natural resources and environmental sustainability.
