During the 77th UN General Assembly meetings held in New York in September 2022, the patron of the zero waste movement, Mrs. Emine Erdoğan, and UN Secretary General Mr. Antonio Guterres came together and signed a “Global Zero Waste Goodwill Declaration”, which included the promise to “promote the zero waste approach worldwide, share good practices, and support zero waste projects, initiatives and programs to encourage responsible production and consumption”, thus taking an important step in this regard.
In the following process, our country submitted a proposal to the UN General Assembly in order to evaluate the zero waste movement as a tool to help combat the global problem of climate change and to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, and to raise awareness about zero waste on a global basis, and the Resolution, which included the issue of observing March 30 as the “International Zero Waste Day” in the UN General Assembly, was accepted - without the need for a vote.
The Resolution also included; The establishment of an Advisory Board, whose term of office will be 3 years, to support the promotion of local and national zero waste initiatives and the dissemination of success stories through platforms such as UNEP/UN Habitat, has been included.
