The Story of Plastic Waste

Natural Resource

The main raw materials of plastics are oil and natural gas. This material, obtained from fossil fuels, is shaped and made suitable for use through chemical processes. The limited nature of natural resources increases the importance of sustainable approaches in plastic production and use.

The plastics industry is a large sector that processes petroleum derivatives and produces products used in many different sectors. Plastic is found in a wide variety of products encountered in daily life. Food packaging, shopping bags, beverage bottles, pipes, electronic products and textile products are common examples of plastic use. These products can be long-lasting or disposable.

Waste

End-of-life plastics are classified as plastic waste. These wastes range from single-use packaging to old electronic device parts. Proper management of plastic waste is critical due to their slow decomposition in nature.

Effects on the Environment and Human Health

Uncontrolled release of plastic waste into nature leads to soil and water pollution. While microplastics pose a serious threat to water resources and marine life, these pollutants can also negatively affect human health. Disposing of plastics by burning causes the release of toxic gases.

Methods to be Applied

Plastic waste is first separated by type and collected, and then included in the recycling process. Recyclable plastics are separated into small pieces with special equipment and processed. These pieces can be combined with raw materials at certain rates and used in the production of new products. In addition, plastics can be melted again and additives added to evaluate them as second-class raw materials.

Delivery Locations

Plastic waste must be delivered to licensed recycling facilities or plastic processing centers. These facilities process the waste and include it in the recycling process.

Recovery

Recycling plastic waste provides great benefits for the environment and the economy. For example, recycling just 1 ton of plastic can save 5,774 kWh of energy, reduce 41 tons of greenhouse gas emissions and gain 23 m³ of storage space. This process helps to protect natural resources and minimize environmental impacts by reducing energy consumption. Recycling turns plastics from waste into a valuable resource.
