Natural Resource

The main source of vegetable oils is oilseed plants. These plants are mostly grown in agricultural areas and constitute an important trade material worldwide. Products such as sunflower, olive and soybean can be grown in a wide geography under different climatic conditions.

Raw Materials

Vegetable seeds used as raw materials are processed into oil by different methods. Plants such as soybean, cottonseed and canola are the most commonly used raw materials for oil production.

Industry

Vegetable oils are used extensively in the cosmetics, biodiesel, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, as well as in the food industry. With developing technology, oil production processes have become more efficient and methods have been developed to reduce waste generation.

Areas of Use

Vegetable oils are used for cooking or in food. The demand for the consumption of ready-made food products called fast food causes a significant increase in the amount of used frying oil, which is a waste vegetable oil.

Used Frying Oil

During frying, physical changes in the oil result in increased viscosity, darkening of color, foaming and a decrease in smoke point. Frying oils that have oxidized under high temperatures and are not suitable for reuse in terms of health are oxidized.

Uncontrolled release of waste oils into nature leads to soil and water pollution. In addition, reuse of waste oils threatens human health. These oils used as frying oils can cause the formation of carcinogenic compounds.

Methods to be Applied

Used vegetable oils should be delivered to collection points and recycled into recycling processes such as biodiesel production. Instead of pouring domestic waste oils into the sink, they should be collected in special containers and delivered to authorized institutions.

Waste vegetable oils should be delivered to collection points determined by municipalities or to licensed recycling facilities. There are many recycling companies operating in this field in Turkey.

Recovery

Biodiesel and nitrogen gas can be produced by recycling used vegetable oils. This process is important both in terms of preventing environmental pollution and increasing energy savings. In addition, recycled oils can be used in the production of industrial products.
