Zero Waste is an approach that aims to prevent waste generation by changing consumption and production habits, and to recycle the waste generated and bring it into the circular economy. It is a vital step to reduce the global waste crisis and environmental impacts.

The Zero Waste Foundation was established in 2023 under the auspices of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's wife Emine Erdoğan. Its aim is to increase zero waste awareness and make this approach sustainable.

The zero waste movement in Turkey began as a pilot project in 2016 and was officially implemented in 2017. It quickly became widespread, increased the recycling rate and found broad public support.

The foundation works in areas such as education, research, project development and implementation. It carries out national and international projects.

Zero waste systems can be established in many areas such as workplaces, educational institutions, public institutions, homes and industrial facilities. For this, waste separation, management plans and the provision of appropriate equipment are required.

March 30 has been declared as “International Zero Waste Day”. This day is celebrated with events to emphasize the importance of waste management and to raise awareness for the zero waste goal.

Individuals can save money while minimizing their environmental impact by reducing waste generation. They can also adopt a more sustainable lifestyle with recycling and reuse habits.

The most common challenges include lack of awareness, inadequate separation equipment, and incorrect waste management habits. These challenges can be overcome through education and awareness-raising activities.
