Zero Waste
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made important statements at the World Climate Action Summit held as part of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai.
"Historical Responsibility for Greenhouse Gas Emissions Below 1%"
In his speech, President Erdoğan emphasized that Turkey has made significant strides in combating climate change. He stated, "Although our historical responsibility for greenhouse gas emissions is below 1%, we are taking major steps using our own resources. We aim to achieve net-zero emissions by 2053. We have doubled our emission reduction target for 2030. As part of this, we expect to reduce 66.6 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions by the end of this year."
Erdoğan highlighted that Turkey ranks 5th in Europe and 12th globally in terms of renewable energy progress. He also stated that in geothermal energy capacity, Turkey ranks 1st in Europe and 4th globally. He added, "We plan to increase the share of renewable energy to 69% by 2053. With the 'Zero Waste' project initiated under the patronage of my wife, we will increase the recycling rate of waste to 60% by 2035."
"Fair Access to Climate Financing is of Great Importance"
President Erdoğan noted the high costs involved in combating climate change and emphasized, "It is crucial for us to have fair access to climate finance resources and technology transfer opportunities."
He also pointed out that following the February 6th Kahramanmaraş earthquake, the rebuilding of cities will prioritize eco-friendly structures and sustainable development goals.
"What's Happening in Gaza is a Crime Against Humanity"
Addressing the humanitarian crisis in Palestine, Erdoğan stated, "What is happening in Gaza is a crime against humanity, a war crime. Those who commit this crime must be held accountable before international law." He emphasized the importance of establishing an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, and expressed Turkey’s readiness to take any responsibility in this process.
Turkey’s Leadership in Climate Action
President Erdoğan announced that the 60th Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will be held in Istanbul in January 2024, and Turkey is a candidate to host the 31st UN Climate Change Conference in 2026.
