Zero Waste
Yesterday, we were also on the hunt for ghost nets. We worked with the Fethiye branch of the Chamber of Shipping and our waste collection vessel TURMEPA. Fethiye Rotary supported us.
Lost or intentionally discarded extension and monofilament nets are referred to as ghost nets. Numerous scientific studies have shown that most ghost nets in seas and freshwater bodies do not decompose in nature, while continuing to fish passively.
Under the leadership of the Fethiye Rotary Club, within the framework of the project "We Are Cleaning Our Seas from Ghost Nets!", volunteer divers participated on October 6, 2019, in Fethiye Dalyan and Sarıgerme coves, in partnership with the Fethiye Municipality, the IMEAK Chamber of Shipping Fethiye Branch, and the DenizTemiz Association/TURMEPA.
Divers conducted a survey over an area of approximately 1 km and at a depth of 18 to 20 meters. They retrieved nets with 30 kg of lead and corks attached, as well as four fishing baskets.
The DenizTemiz Association/TURMEPA and the DTO Fethiye waste collection boat, with the support of divers, removed the ghost nets.
