Minister Kurum participated in the "Zero Waste for Our Common Home, the World" program.

Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change Murat Kurum stated that over 30 million tons of waste have been recycled through the Zero Waste movement, saving 347 million trees from destruction. He emphasized, "In intergovernmental climate diplomacy, Zero Waste will go down in history as a movement that guarantees the future of all nations and peoples, and today’s demonstration of our unity will be inscribed in golden letters on the pages of history."

Kurum spoke at the "Zero Waste for Our Common Home, the World" themed program held at the Presidential Complex, attended by Emine Erdoğan, wife of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, along with ambassadors and their spouses.

Highlighting the significant threats and crises posed by climate change, Kurum referred to the European Union Climate Change Service's report that indicated 2022 saw the largest increase in greenhouse gas emissions in human history. He noted that last year was the fifth hottest year globally and the second hottest in Europe, drawing attention to environmental issues faced by countries like Tunisia, Pakistan, Japan, Senegal, and France due to the climate crisis.

Kurum recalled the wildfires in Antalya and Muğla and the floods in Kastamonu, Sinop, and Bartın, asserting that climate crises can only be prevented through collective effort.

He explained that the Zero Waste movement, spearheaded by Emine Erdoğan, has brought a new perspective to the world and made a significant call for action. He continued, "Starting its journey in 2017, our Zero Waste movement has reached its fifth year; it has facilitated the recycling of over 30 million tons of waste and saved 347 million trees from destruction. Today, the Zero Waste movement has become an environmental mobilization extending from national to global levels, a 'diplomatic attraction area' that every country wants to contribute to."

Kurum mentioned that the Zero Waste movement has received awards worldwide, and March 30 is recognized as International Zero Waste Day. He stated, "Zero Waste continues to safeguard future generations against the climate crisis, taking on humanity's responsibilities and inviting all of humanity to this journey. I believe that in intergovernmental climate diplomacy, Zero Waste will be a movement that guarantees the future of all nations and peoples, and today’s demonstration of our unity will be inscribed in golden letters in history."

He concluded by saying, "With over 5,000 years of state experience, historical accumulation that transcends continents, and its existence in Anatolia, which it has preserved well, and a century of Republic experience, Turkey is ready to be a role model in the green transformation and net-zero emission targets."
