02 May 2019

Emine Erdoğan, the wife of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, visited the Cemre Bazaar organized by the Association for Social Development Center Education and Social Solidarity (TOGEM-DER) to support the Zero Waste Project.

Emine Erdoğan attended an event themed "Clean Environment" held at the Sheraton Grand Istanbul Ataşehir Hotel, where she toured the Cemre Bazaar and examined products themed around the "Zero Waste" initiative.

During the program, Emine Erdoğan was accompanied by TOGEM-DER President Saadet Gülbaran, Minister of Family, Labor and Social Services Zehra Zümrüt Selçuk, and Minister of Trade Ruhsar Pekcan.

Emine Erdoğan selected cards from a wish tree designed by TOGEM-DER for families in need, donating air purifiers, bicycles, computers, and washing machines to these families.

She closely examined handcrafted products, washable baby diapers, and eco-friendly beeswax wraps as alternatives to aluminum foil. Additionally, Emine Erdoğan reviewed handicrafts made by women entrepreneurs supported by KADEM and gathered information from the "Zero Waste" stand of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change.

ZERO WASTE PROJECT

Emine Erdoğan met Bea Johnson, known as a pioneer of the "Zero Waste" movement worldwide, and shared experiences regarding the development of Zero Waste Projects in Turkey and globally.

Later, she joined Chef Arda Türkmen in the Kitchen Workshop to prepare a Zero Waste meal. From the vegetable peels used in their cooking, they made fritters, while other organic waste was transformed into compost.

The event emphasized the importance of not pouring waste oil down the drain to protect seas and groundwater sources. Cemre Çarşısı hosted a variety of events, from shopping at thematic stands to eco-friendly discussions and healthy eating. The event highlighted the importance of the sharing economy, with items from famous individuals being sold.

Renowned chefs like Arda Türkmen, Rafet İnce, Özlem Mekik, Eyüp Kemal Sevinç, Ali Açıkgül, Ömür Akkor, and Duygu Tuğçu discussed recycling in the kitchen, emphasizing that "Love for the environment grows as it is shared."

The event featured many prominent writers, including Mehmet Fatih Çıtak, Hülya Erol, Mim Kemal Öke, Mehmet Ali Bulut, and Kemal Özer, as well as dietitian Taylan Kümeli and Healthy Living Coach Ayşe Tolga under the "Zero Waste, Zero Hunger" theme.

Bea Johnson, a leader of the global "Zero Waste" movement and author of "Zero Waste Home," which has been translated into 22 languages, met with university students on the first day of the event. Johnson shared insights on how to transition to a Zero Waste lifestyle, tips to save the planet, and how to live without producing waste at home.

The income generated from Cemre Çarşısı will be used to promote the Zero Waste Project.
