Zero Waste
Emine Erdoğan, the wife of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, sent a video message for the events to be held on March 30th, marking the second celebration of International Zero Waste Day.
In her message, Emine Erdoğan emphasized that nature serves as an inspiration, referencing the teachings of Mevlana, one of Anatolia's significant values. She quoted Mevlana's words: "Be like the river in generosity and helping others, like the sun in compassion and mercy, like the earth in humility and modesty, and like the sea in tolerance," noting that these words continue to guide us today.
"The Earth Struggles Against Chemical Waste"
Emine Erdoğan reminded everyone of nature's generosity to humanity, stating, "The earth, which nourishes us with humility, is struggling to survive due to our chemical waste." She pointed out that 2 billion tons of waste are produced globally every year, causing serious environmental and health issues. She also said, "Every day, 2,000 garbage truckloads of plastic are dumped into the oceans. This is not in line with our consciences."
Expressing her satisfaction that the Zero Waste Movement, which began in 2017, has turned into a global initiative with the decision of the UN General Assembly, Erdoğan said, "One of the most valuable legacies we can leave to future generations is the awareness of living a life without waste and in a sustainable way."
"Responsibility at the Heart of Zero Waste"
Emine Erdoğan stated that the Zero Waste Movement presents an individual responsibility for everyone, adding, "We must accept that every resource we consume must be used responsibly. We must make conscious choices and align our habits with nature."
As the Chair of the UN High-Level Advisory Board on Zero Waste, Erdoğan said that efforts to spread good practices in waste management are continuing intensively.
"Call to Support the Global Zero Waste Pledge"
Recalling the "Global Zero Waste Pledge" initiated with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, which is now open for online signatures, Emine Erdoğan invited everyone to join the pledge and become a volunteer for zero waste. "More than 30 heads of state and government leaders' spouses, along with thousands of individuals, have supported this pledge," she noted.
Erdoğan thanked the diplomatic missions around the world for their efforts on Zero Waste Day and expressed her hopes that the events organized with international organizations such as the UN, OECD, UNESCO, and UNEP will bring about positive outcomes.
