Zero Waste
Emine Erdoğan, wife of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the UN Headquarters in New York in her capacity as the Chair of the UN High-Level Advisory Board on Sustainable Development Goals.
Emine Erdoğan expressed her pleasure at meeting UN Secretary-General Guterres again during a meeting held at the UN Headquarters.
As the Chair of the UN High-Level Advisory Board on Sustainable Development Goals, Emine Erdoğan shared with Guterres the global efforts on waste management and the Sustainable Development Goals. She stated that the strong support of the UN on this important issue is a significant source of motivation for them.
Emine Erdoğan also mentioned the upcoming 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) to be held in Azerbaijan in November 2024. She highlighted that one of the thematic days of the conference is planned to focus on "Zero Waste," with some special events organized around it. Additionally, she stated that the third in-person meeting of the UN High-Level Advisory Board on Zero Waste is expected to take place on the sidelines of COP29 and invited Secretary-General Guterres to attend the event.
Emine Erdoğan drew attention to the recent wars, emphasizing that they not only cause humanitarian damage but also lead to environmental destruction. She stated that wars devastate natural habitats, pollute resources, and exacerbate the climate crisis.
After the meeting, Emine Erdoğan shared a post on her social media account, saying, "We had a productive meeting with UN Secretary-General Mr. Antonio Guterres at the UN Headquarters. We discussed our global efforts on waste management and sustainable development goals within the framework of the UN High-Level Advisory Board on Zero Waste, which I chair. On this occasion, I invited Mr. Guterres to the third official meeting of our Advisory Board, which we plan to hold on the sidelines of COP29 in Azerbaijan. I express my gratitude to Secretary-General Guterres for his strong support for the activities of our Advisory Board."
